TCM's Film Noir of the Week at Midnight ET Saturday Night/ Sunday Morning is Cry Danger (1951), starring Dick Powell and Rhonda Fleming.

Powell plays a prototype Noir protagonist, a tough guy just out of prison for a “crime he didn't commit.” He had been released when an alcoholic ex-Marine provided him with a false alibi, in the hope of being cut in for a share of the loot. Powell tells him he's really innocent.

Dick Powell, Jean Porter, a second actor, and neighborhood as character, L.A.’s Bunker Hill.

Meanwhile Powell's best friend is still in prison, so Powell goes after the real culprit, played by William Conrad.

William Conrad as the heavy. Conrad played one of the hit-men in Robert Siodmak’s Hemingway-inspired masterpiece, The Killers (1946), but didn’t become a star until TV titan producer, Quinn Martin, tapped him to play the eponymous, middle-aged, bulldog-faced, private detective in Cannon. Conrad also made a minor fortune with his rich, baritone voice, doing voice-overs for TV commercials. Late in life, he co-starred in Jake and the Fat Man.

L-R: Regis Toomey, Dick Powell, and Dick Erdman
Rhonda Fleming is still alive, at 94, as is Dick Erdman, at 92!

Fleming is Powell's ex-girl, now married to his imprisoned friend.

It all shakes out in typical Noir fashion.

Cry Danger repeats at 10 a.m. ET Sunday morning, April 22.

Oscar-Winning Actress, Natalie Portman, [Craps] on Israel, after Promising She Wouldn’t, Rejecting “Jewish Nobel,” and Thereby also [Crapping] on Anish Kapoor, Itzhak Perlman, Michael Bloomberg and Michael Douglas

“Natalie Portman speaking onstage during the Vulture Festival LA at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, Calif., Nov. 19, 2017. (Joe Scarnici/Getty Images for Vulture Festival)” N.S.: Note that Portman is a “vegan”; in other words, not only does she not eat meat, poultry, or fish, but she doesn’t even eat dairy. I don’t know what the vegan rules are for eggs, but they’re probably “traif,” too. Besides which, how many eggs can one flake eat in a day? She’s supposedly a math whiz, so I guess she’s some sort of autistic savant.

News Brief

Genesis Prize cancels ceremony after 2018 winner Natalie Portman said she won’t visit Israel

By Josefin Dolsten

Jewish Telegraphic Agency

This is a developing story.

(JTA) — The Genesis Prize announced it was canceling its prize ceremony in Israel in June after 2018 recipient Natalie Portman said she would not take part in light of “recent events.”

On Thursday, the Genesis Prize Foundation, which awards what it calls the “Jewish Nobel,” said it was “very saddened” that the Israeli-American actress would not take part in the ceremony. The foundation said that Portman’s representative notified it that “[r]ecent events in Israel have been extremely distressing to her and she does not feel comfortable participating in any public events in Israel” and that “she cannot in good conscience move forward with the ceremony.”

The Genesis Prize Foundation cancelled the prize ceremony, saying in a statement that its organizers “fear that Ms. Portman’s decision will cause our philanthropic initiative to be politicized, something we have worked hard for the past five years to avoid.”

Portman did not specify which events caused her distress, although the United Nations and the European Union recently called for investigations into the use of live ammunition by Israel’s military following clashes along the border with Gaza that have left dozens of Palestinians dead and hundreds wounded. Israel celebrated the 70th anniversary of its independence on Thursday.

[1. There’s no such thing as “Palestinians”; 2. How are you supposed to kill people, without using live ammo?; and 3. Isn’t the Newspeak way to say the Israelis left the Arabs “injured”?]

In November, the Genesis Prize announced that Portman would receive its 2018 award, which comes with a cash prize that recipients may direct toward causes of their choice. She joins artist Anish Kapoor, violinist Itzhak Perlman, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and actor-director Michael Douglas as winners of the $1 million prize, which “honors individuals who serve as an inspiration to the next generation of Jews through their outstanding professional achievement along with their commitment to Jewish values and the Jewish people.”

Genesis said in December Portman’s prize money had been doubled to $2 million by a donation by Israeli philanthropist Morris Kahn. The foundation did not indicate whether Portman would still receive the prize money in light of her announcement.

The Genesis Prize was established by Mikhail Fridman and other wealthy Russian-Jewish businessmen and operates in a partnership with Israel’s Prime Minister’s Office and the Jewish Agency for Israel.

In 2009, Portman joined other Hollywood stars in protesting calls for a boycott against the Toronto International Film Festival for its staging of a Tel Aviv-themed event. She also directed and starred in a Hebrew-language adaptation of Israeli novelist Amos Oz’s memoir, “A Tale of Love and Darkness.” In a statement following the Genesis Prize announcement in November, Portman said she is “proud of my Israeli roots and Jewish heritage.”

In 2015, following the re-election of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, she said she was “very, very upset and disappointed.”

“I find his racist comments horrific,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

[What “racist comments”?]

“However, I don’t — what I want to make sure is, I don’t want to use my platform [the wrong way]. I feel like there’s some people who become prominent, and then it’s out in the foreign press. You know, shit on Israel. I do not. I don’t want to do that.”

[Well, so much for that.]

A member of the Stix household said that yesterday.

When I first visited Communist East Berlin in September 1980, nothing was real. The coffee was entirely artificial. The chocolate bars had 0% cocoa in them. The “Orangensaft” (orange juice) was devoid of orange juice. It looked and tasted like Tang, except that one of the vendors served his up with a layer of mold on the top.

The only somewhat real thing was called “Antonsaft,” in honor of a party convention.

Thank God, I live in the free West!

For a number of years, I’ve noticed that America increasingly resembles the old Communist East Bloc.

Fruit “juice drinks” with almost no real fruit juice (or with 50% water), sold by big-name companies, but for the same price as real juice. Expensive, leather-free “genuine leather” jackets and belts.

About a week ago, I bought a quart of Yoplait “strawberry” yogurt. Except there isn’t a single strawberry in it!

Barbara Bush (1925-2018)

Barbara Bush, wife of one dimwitted, globalist president and mother of another, passed away today at the age of 92. Contrary to MSM coverage, the Bushes were not a devoted couple. Surviving Mrs. Bush, besides her husband, sons, in-laws and many relatives, is George's mistress of many years, Jennifer Fitzgerald—whom Hillary Clinton referenced in 1992 as “a well-known person in Washington with connections to George Bush.”

She was upset the media would not dig up info on her husband's opponents’ philandering.

Bush and Fitzgerald met in 1974 and carried on the affair for years—with Fitzgerald referred to as the 2nd Mrs. Bush.

There are many stories referencing the Bush affair, which include comments from people who say, “Their personal life is none of our business.”

I disagree—especially when a phony image is displayed to the point of regurgitation. George Herbert Walker Bush, a family man and saint? One would think so, based on MSM reports. Maybe because he was the CIA director and played the globalist game, his secret life was never exposed.

That Barbara Bush went along for the ride, is similar to MLK's wife, Bill Cosby's wife, and Bill Clinton's wife, Hillary (among others) tolerating disrespectful behavior for most of their marriages.

[N.S.: We’re going to have to agree to disagree, on this point, GRA.]

It's not inspiring to me.

Barbara Bush has been described by all, as a great first lady, who lived a great life.

But without self-respect, and her refusal to address the humiliation of a 20-year affair, I would hesitate to raise her up as a role model for women.

But the MSM love the globalists. So, Saint Barbara it is.

[N.S.: This reminds me of the death of Mickey Mantle.]

The first thing that struck me was AFI’s #1 pick. I don’t cite John Williams’ Star Wars score on my list at all, because it’s such a shameless plagiary of Holst’s The Planets, especially “Mars, Bringer of War.”

When my chief of research was ten or 11, I introduced him to The Planets. A few months later, I played Star Wars for him. At that point, John Williams was his favorite movie composer, but the moment he heard the opening to Star Wars, he was dejected and said, “I guess nobody’s really original.”

As for Nino Rota (#5), didn’t they know that Rota’s score for The Godfather was a plagiary? Rota was initially nominated for Best Original Score, but then someone dropped a dime on him, reporting that Rota had recycled the score from a previous movie he’d worked on, Fortunella (1958). According to IMDB.com, the nomination was then revoked, and the Academy substituted John Addison’s score for Sleuth.

If the AFI committee loved Rota’s score so much, they should have chosen Fortunella, instead.

Jerry Goldsmith’s score for Planet of the Apes (1968) (#18) is some god-awful techno-thing. I love most of Goldsmith’s work, but that is my least favorite score of his. Although his score for Chinatown (1974) is wonderful, his score for Patton (1970) is vastly superior to it.

"One of the best movie soundtracks ever. Come on Hollywood, you can do s--t like this again, let go of the damn Marvel movies already..."

N.S.: Hollywood can't do soundtracks like this, anymore, because James Horner is dead...
because Aaron Copland is dead...
because Elmer Bernstein is dead...
and because Jerry Goldsmith is dead.

As for the Marvel Comics angle, Apollo 13's heroes were all normal, patriotic, white men, as were almost all of America's heroes. Such heroes are today verboten. Thus, we are left with affirmative action casting for comic book movies, racial hoax movies like Hidden Figures, and er, things like My Love with the Creature from the Black Lagoon, better known as The Shape of Water.

Starbucks: The Video and Essay

By Jerry PDX
Monday, April 16, 2018 at 11:02:00 A.M. EDT

One time I was walking outside near a Starbucks and a rain shower hit—it happens here in Oregon—out of nowhere, a deluge will hit. I stepped inside the Starbucks to get out of the rain. A couple minutes later an employee came up and told me to leave, if I wasn't going to purchase anything. Too bad I'm not black, I could have filed a lawsuit and claimed discrimination.

Jerry PDX
Monday, April 16, 2018 at 12:09:00 P.M. EDT

Here is a video of the arrest:

Look at the first guy arrested and the way he was dressed, not exactly homeless but a kind of grungy that could be; the other guy had a jogging outfit on. Most Starbucks in my city don't secure the bathrooms but will ask people to leave, if they sit too long without buying something. Not securing bathrooms or how long they allow people to sit without paying depends on the problems they have with junkies and homeless trying to use their facilities. Stores with those kind of problems will secure bathrooms and monitor sketchy-looking people that come in. I'm going to guess this store was having those issues and it is Philadelphia so likely many, if not most, were black. So, you get two underdressed black men, one looking possibly homeless, sitting and not paying, employees ask them to leave, the men become combative and defensive, cops are called, behavior continues and they get arrested. Don't need to be black to have that happen.

I can't help but wonder if this was even a set-up. With black homeless and junkies being asked to leave the store and barred from using the bathroom a few blacks and white SJW's knew they could set the store up for a bias incident and possible lawsuit.

This will result in corporate directives allowing people to sit longer without paying or use the restrooms, if you're black that is. If you're white, it doesn't apply.

Somebody should print up some signs and post them on Starbuck doors:

"NON PAYING CUSTOMERS - BLACK ONLY"

"WHITES STILL PAY"

7 Dead, 17 Wounded, in South Carolina Prison Riot Characterized as “Mass Casualty” Event; as Usual, It’s All the Guards’ Fault!

South Carolina prison riot characterized as “mass casualty” event
The riot, in which seven were killed, is part of a broader epidemic of violence in US prisons.
By German Lopez

Updated Apr 16, 2018, 3:08 p.m. EDT

A South Carolina prison erupted in violence on Sunday night and early Monday morning, turning into what officials described as a “mass casualty” event.

In total, seven inmates were killed and at least 17 were seriously injured, according to the Associated Press. An inmate told the AP that bodies were “literally stacked on top of each other,” claiming that prison guards did little to stop the violence between inmates. Most of the fatal injuries appeared to be a result of stabbing or slashing, although some inmates may have been beaten to death. No prison guards were hurt.

The riot was the worst in a US prison in a quarter century, according to the AP.

Officials said the dispute at Lee Correctional Institution, which holds people convicted of some of the worst crimes in the state, was over money and territory. An inmate told the AP that the fighting appeared to be gang-related.

He also said that many cell lock doors were broken even before the riot, allowing inmates to roam freely and perhaps contributing to the chaos.

[“Perhaps”?]

“It’s been over two hours, but no COs [corrections officers] have responded to this unit, and no medical personnel have attempted to render any kind of aid,” the inmate wrote to the AP. “The COs never even attempted to render aid, nor quell the disturbance. They just sat in the control bubble, called the issue in, then sat on their collective asses.”

[That’s what you call an unofficial strike.]

The violence broke out around 7:15 pm on Sunday, spreading to three housing units. Officers failed to contain the violence for hours, with order restored by 2:55 am on Monday, the South Carolina Department of Corrections said in a statement on Facebook.

GRA: Build more prisons.

N.S.: Considering that whatever the guards do, according to the media, politicians, prosecutors, judges and anti-scholars, they’re wrong and the criminals are right, it’s much better to do nothing, and go home free and alive, then do something, and end up dead or in jail.

Latest media hoopla story. Blacks go into Starbucks in Philly, say they're waiting for a friend. Want to use the bathroom. Get denied. Told to leave. Won't leave. Cops called. Still won't leave. Cops arrest them, while ignorant whites bitch about it.

The story of an American hero’s wife never gets too old to tell
By Dennis McCarthy | dmccarthynews@gmail.com |
April 5, 2018 at 3:59 p.m.
Daily News

All these years later, she’s still remembered by newspaper editors and publishers in small towns across this country wanting to know if they can reprint for their readers a column I wrote on her death.

Sure, I tell them, go ahead. We had her all to ourselves out here for so long working at the Sepulveda VA, we almost took her for granted — as if that was ever really possible.

There’s never been a woman who commanded so much attention and respect from the first moment the veterans heard whispers in the VA hallways about who the sweet lady carrying the clipboard was.

Pamela Murphy, widow of America’s most decorated fighting man in World War II – Medal of Honor recipient Audie Murphy. Mr. Hell and Back.

It was like somebody told them Gen. Patton was knocking at the front door or Ike was flying in from the White House to pay the troops a visit. Their backs stiffened and they snapped to attention.

RELATED STORY: Dennis McCarthy: Remembering shy heroine Pam Murphy on Veterans Day

Audie Murphy’s widow? No fooling?

Pam Murphy had lived in Audie’s massive shadow for 20 years. She never complained publicly when his gambling took all their money, and his philandering stole their marriage.

After he died at age 46 in a 1971 private plane crash, we all learned of the demons the war-hero-turned-Hollywood-actor had still been fighting – the faces of buddies he lost and men he killed (an estimated 250 German soldiers) were returning now as nightmares, not medals.

Pam always defended him, even as she was forced to move from their sprawling ranch-style home in Van Nuys to a small, one-bedroom apartment near the VA in Mission Hills – taking a clerk’s job in the main reception area to support herself, and begin paying off Audie’s considerable debts.

RELATED STORY: Dennis McCarthy: Pam Murphy, widow of actor Audie Murphy, was veterans’ friend and advocate

It took her nearly 10 years, but she paid off every one – 100 cents on the dollar. Nobody would ever say Audie Murphy welched on a deal.

Men with tears in their eyes would walk up to her in the hallway, and ask for a hug when they learned who she was. “Thank you,” they said, over and over. The first couple of years, the hugs were more for Audie.

The last 30 years, they were for her.

She was the one who held their hand when they were in pain, the one cutting through the red tape to get her boys in to see the specialists they needed. She never looked for quitting time to arrive. She left when the last veteran on her clipboard had seen the doctor.

And if one was still sitting there an hour after his appointment time, she thought nothing of taking him by the hand, and marching him past the objecting receptionist, and straight into the doctor’s office.

She got reprimanded more than a few times, but she didn’t care. They were her boys, Audie’s war buddies, and she was going to take care of them. If that meant stepping on some toes, well, tough.

The VA was there to serve the veterans, not the other way around.

In 2002, she was one of the employees who were going to be laid off because of budget cuts. She was considered “excess staff.”

Excess, hell, said the old vets. If she goes, we go. For a week, they protested outside the VA gates until Pam Murphy wasn’t considered excess staff anymore.

It had been many years since she had been back to Arlington National Cemetery to visit Audie’s gravesite because money was always tight. She had a friend in Washington D.C. who would put flowers on his grave for her every Veteran’s Day.

With all Audie had put her through, all the heartbreak, she still loved the guy.

Pam worked at the VA right up to her 87th birthday, and died three years later peacefully in her sleep in the same small apartment she took after Audie died.

It was standing room only at her memorial in a little chapel on the VA grounds. Old soldiers and Marines who had looked death in the face with her husband, and never blinked, couldn’t hold back their tears at her passing.

And now, I’m sitting here eight years later getting ready to send an email to the publisher of the Midwest Country News in Southern Iowa and Northern Missouri, who wants to know if she can reprint the story of Pamela Murphy for her readers.

Absolutely.

TCM's Film Noir of the Week at Midnight ET Saturday Night/Sunday Morning is Mystery Street (1950). Ricardo Montalban stars as a Boston police detective investigating the murder of a bar girl (Jan Sterling). Marshall Thompson plays the innocent man charged with her murder. Sally Forrest is his loyal wife who suspects her husband was cheating on her with the dead girl.

Bruce Bennett plays a Harvard forensics specialist who helps Montalban solve the crime. The film has circa 1950 forensic science. A sidelight is Montalban's Mexican-American cop going after an upper-class, old family Bostonian.

Sally Forrest and Ricardo Montalban

Mystery Street repeats at 10 a.m. ET Sunday morning, April 15.

Anatomy of a Murder (1959) was a courtroom masterpiece with an undercurrent of viciousness that had nothing to do with the story. Director Otto Preminger loved to to cheat on the Hays Code, which censored moral indecency, and cast Joseph Welch as the presiding judge, as a reward to the Communist-sympathizer lawyer, for bushwhacking Senator Joseph McCarthy during the 1954 Army-McCarthy hearings. Preminger also hired Duke Ellington to compose a jazz score, and appear in the picture, playing himself, albeit under a different name. Ellington's score is lovely, but completely inappropriate to a picture set in the boondocks of 1950s Wisconsin. That choice, too, expressed some sort of cockamamie political statement by Preminger.

Earlier at 12 p.m. ET Saturday, TCM shows Anatomy of a Murder (1959).

Left to right: Jimmy Stewart, Ben Gazzara, and Arthur O'Connell. Stewart would be nominated for Best Actor for the fifth and last time; O'Connell would be nominated for Best Supporting Actor for the second and last time.

This is the Otto Preminger-directed classic starring James Stewart as a lawyer defending a man who killed his wife's alleged rapist.

Lee Remick and George C. Scott

The story (based on an actual case) is ambiguous as to the guilt of Stewart's client.

Kathryn Grant (later Crosby) and Stewart in court

One of the best scenes is when James Stewart's character tells his client "the four ways I can defend murder."

White Guy was in the Wrong Place at the Wrong Time: His Own Home!

IF YOU'RE WHITE, NEVER OPEN YOUR DOOR

White man now charged with attempted murder after black 14-year- old knocks on his door in the early morning hours.

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (WXYZ) - A bond has been set for a man accused of chasing after and shooting at a Rochester teen seeking directions to school.

Jeff Ziegler, a former Lt. in the Detroit Fire Department, was arraigned on felony charges of being in possession of a firearm and assault with intent to murder. His bond was set at $50,000.

According to Assistant Prosecutor Kelly Collins, Ziegler has a previous weapons conviction from 2005.

The judge additionally ordered the Rochester man to not have direct contact with the victim or his family, and to surrender all of his weapons to the Oakland County Sheriff's Department. He must also wear a GPS tether and attend mental health counseling two days a week.

Because the suspect stays within a 10 mile radius of the victim, the judge ordered that if bond is made, he will be required to find another place to live.

High school freshman shot at after stopping to ask for directions to school
When 14-year-old Brennan Walker missed the bus and tried to walk to school Friday morning, he got lost after he couldn't remember the route. That's when Walker attempted to ask for directions at a nearby home.

Zeigler allegedly chased after Walker and fired a shot because he and his wife believed the 14-year-old was attempting to break into their home, according to a press release.

GRA: Probably Lesta's top story tonight… [chuckle]. So, three rules now:

1) If you hit a black with your car, never stop to see how injured they are—you will die. [Or be maimed.]

2) Don't answer your door to a black—nothing good can come of it. This incident will lead to prison for the guy who shouldn't have been bothered in the first place. "Lost my way to school"? How often did he go to get lost? Incredible.

3) The overriding rule: Never associate with blacks, period. You will die earlier than you planned to. If you aren't killed, you will lose money, your sanity, or your freedom.

Sad story of a white guy being in the wrong place at the wrong time—his home.

“President Donald Trump announced Friday night that he had ordered precision strikes on Syria after an apparent chemical weapon attack last week by the Syrian government.

“Earlier Friday, Russia and Britain exchanged sharp accusations earlier Friday over the suspected poison-gas attack, and the U.S. Navy started to move an additional Tomahawk missile-armed ship within striking range.”

The Papa John’s Murder of Gordon Schaffer: David in TN’s Exclusive Report for WEJB/NSU on the Verdict and Sentencing!

War crime victim Gordon Schaffer, 22

By David in TN
Friday, April 13, 2018 at 12:52:00 A.M. EDT

I arrived at the Columbia, Tennessee courthouse at 8:15 am Thursday morning, 15 minutes before the day's session was to start. I was sitting on a bench outside waiting for the courtroom to open. Judge Robert Jones walked past, saw me, and said hello. I said hello back.

A year ago at a hearing, Judge Jones looked at me and said "Do you have business here?" I answered "I'm a spectator." He obviously recognized me. Very few spectators were in the courtroom. Almost everyone was a friend or family of the victim, Gordon Schaffer.

The lawyers argued about Darious Fitzpatrick's "previous criminal activity." Fitzpatrick had robbed a Dollar General Store across town that night, but it didn't come up in this trial for the Papa John's murder.

The jury went out to deliberate at 9 am. Verdict watch was on.

After a time, I went out to have a meal and go to the public library to check the internet. Fitzpatrick sat at the defense table the whole time. He never moved, totally impassive.

I sat in the gallery reading a book. Time passed very slowly. Suddenly, at 2:05 pm, a buzzer went off, signifying a verdict.

The jury filed in. The foreman, who looked the youngest member of the panel, in his mid-twenties, read the verdict. There were three counts:

Guilty of 1st Degree Murder. Guilty of First Degree Felony Murder. Guilty of Special Aggravated Robbery. The sentencing phase began immediately.

District Attorney General Brent Cooper spoke, calling for a sentence of Life Without Parole. Cooper said "Shaffer never will live while Fitzpatrick does."

Defense attorney Greg Latta then argued Fitzgerald's co-defendant Genovah Pye got off easy by testifying against his partner in crime. Latta said his client should get life with parole.

Gordon Shaffer's mother, Mary Buckner, takes the stand. Ms. Buckner said her son wasn't perfect but tried to make everyone laugh and never met a stranger. He had recently acquired a steady girlfriend. Ms. Buckner said "My only boy. My only boy." She was in tears and had to stop for a few moments. A glass of water and a tissue was brought to her.

Ms. Buckner said she gets nervous when she sees young black males and is angry at herself for feeling like this. She has anxiety attacks. "I don't get parole for this," she said.

Ms. Buckner then said Fitzpatrick had destroyed his own mother's life after all she had done for him. "You spit in her face," she said.

The defendant was allowed to make a statement. Fitzpatrick mumbled "I'm sorry," almost inaudible. His mother was in the courtroom but didn't take the stand, never said anything.

DAG [District Attorney General] Cooper's co-prosecutor, Dan Ronde, gave a rebuttal argument "Losing a child is the toughest thing in the world."

Ronde said he was 68 years old, was aggressive and very able.

The jury consisted of six men and six women, nine white and three black, four white men, two black men, five white women, one black woman.

The penalty phase verdict came at 3:55 p.m. The jury decided on a sentence of Life with the Possibility of Parole.

So ended the "Papa John's Murder Case." It got a lot of publicity when it occurred in October 2014, even some national publicity. Over the next few years, there was seemingly a news blackout. The only reporter was from the local Columbia Daily Herald.
[A “news blackout,” except, that is, for David in TN!]

The sentencing hearing is scheduled for May 21 when the sentence will presumably be made official. I assume Judge Jones will act as 13th Juror.

This is something the late Judge Baumgartner neglected to do for the Christian-Newsom Knoxville Horror Trials.

N.S.: War criminal Darious Fitzpatrick, though only 17 at the time of the war crime in 2014, was already a violent career criminal with several felony convictions as a juvenile; his example is spurring calls for juvenile justice reform in Tennessee. I did not refer to Fitzpatrick as a "suspected war criminal," because he has confessed that he shot to kill Gordon Schaffer, even though it took him several shots to hit his victim.
